Your hotel room, web store and cruise plans face risk today
Overall posture: Elevated5-minute read
A Manhattan hotel-room burglary led to an arrest, a reminder that your own room is not secure when you travel. CISA says attackers are actively exploiting a flaw in Adobe Commerce and Magento, and a $9m romance scam that targeted elderly victims ended in guilty pleas. Abroad, a luxury cruise has stranded passengers in Cambodia over fuel costs, the UK has updated advice for 11 Middle East countries, and South Africa has put 500 soldiers on the street after a mob killing.

A Manhattan hotel-room burglary ends in an arrest, with your travel kit in the frame
Police in Manhattan arrested a man in connection with a burglary at a hotel. Two outlets carried the report. The headlines do not describe what was taken or how the thief got in.
Why it matters. The traveling principal, spouse and any assistant who books rooms are exposed through whatever they leave in a hotel room, from jewelry and watches to devices and documents. New York stays are routine for many families, so room habits matter.
What to do
Keep jewelry, watches and devices with you or in a hotel safe, not loose in the room.
Tell staff not to share room numbers or travel dates by email or text.
Attackers are exploiting Magento stores, so your family company's web shop is a way in
CISA added two vulnerabilities to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog on the basis of active exploitation. One is an Adobe Commerce and Magento flaw that allows a dangerous file type to be uploaded. Separately, the FBI has issued a critical vulnerability alert on PHP Core.
Why it matters. The family office, a family-owned brand or any executive whose company runs an online store on Magento or PHP is exposed through that site, and through customer and payment data behind it. Ask your IT lead for patch status this week.
What to do
Ask your web provider in writing whether Adobe Commerce, Magento and PHP are patched.
Review who can upload files to your site and remove unused accounts.
A $9m romance scam on elderly victims ends in guilty pleas, and your parents are the target
Two Ghanaian twin brothers and a US woman pleaded guilty to a $9m romance scam. The group targeted elderly people in the US and Europe, built a relationship, then persuaded them to transfer large sums.
Why it matters. Older parents and grandparents of principals are exposed through dating apps, social media and phone contact, and the money leaves by wire. Families with visible wealth are likely to look attractive to this kind of approach.
What to do
Agree a family rule that any request to move money to a new contact gets a second call first.
Set a call-back check for any wire an older relative makes.

Federal agents are searching prominent people's homes, and the paperwork stays sealed
The Justice Department declined to unseal the warrant for a search of Rep. Ilhan Omar's home this month, despite a request from more than a dozen news organizations. Separately, BBC News, citing US media, reports an FBI raid on a California home tied to former Congressman Eric Swalman. It is Eric Swalwell, who has faced misconduct allegations he denies.
Why it matters. A public figure's spouse, household staff and family office are exposed if agents arrive at a residence with a warrant and nobody knows the procedure. Counsel and the household need a plan for who answers the door and who calls the lawyer.
What to do
Give household staff a one-page protocol: be polite, call counsel, do not consent to anything.
Confirm your lawyer's after-hours number is held by the house manager.
A luxury cruise has stranded its passengers in Cambodia over fuel costs
The Villa Vie Odyssey has suspended its voyage because of soaring fuel costs. Passengers are stranded in Cambodia while the operator works on temporary living arrangements for them.
Why it matters. Executives and families who book long-stay or luxury sea travel are exposed to a sudden end of the trip far from home, with no clear exit plan. Check the operator's finances and your own exit options before you sail.
What to do
Before booking sea travel, confirm in writing who pays for repatriation if the operator suspends.
Keep an evacuation fund and a backup flight plan for any long trip.
UK updates advice for 11 Middle East countries, and your Gulf and Turkey trips are affected
The UK Foreign Office updated its warnings and insurance advice on regional tensions for Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Yemen, Jordan, Iraq, Bahrain, Kuwait, Palestine, Israel, Pakistan and Syria. The US State Department lists the West Bank at Level 3, Reconsider Travel.
Why it matters. The traveling executive, the family on a private jet routing through the region and the staff who book it are exposed to changing insurance terms and travel advisories. Review itineraries that touch these countries or connect through them.
What to do
Re-read your travel insurance terms for the listed countries before any trip.
Have your travel manager recheck routes and layovers this week.
South Africa puts 500 soldiers on the streets, so your foreign staff and travelers face tension
South Africa is deploying 500 soldiers to quell anti-immigration violence. The move follows the death of a foreign national, beaten by a mob during an anti-immigrant protest last week.
Why it matters. Traveling executives, safari and business visitors, and foreign-born household staff or drivers working in South Africa are exposed to unrest and to disruption on roads. Check your local contacts before moving anyone.
What to do
Ask your South Africa host or security driver for a same-day situation update before any trip.
Tell foreign-born staff in the country how to reach you in an emergency.

One thing to do today
Lock down your travel exposure before the next trip
Your hotel stays, itineraries and staff messages tell a thief where you are and what you carry. SAG's Exposure Assessment maps what is visible about your family and travel and closes the gaps. SAG can put it in place for you; book a private call.
Train for it: Inner Cordon, advance work, close protection, venue and route planning.
