Your kids' adults, your vendors' encryption, your DC routes
Overall posture: Guarded5-minute read
The most immediate change for Washington-area families is a wider National Guard patrol footprint, now including military vehicles and boats, with the decision dated October 29. Two criminal cases, one in Valley Stream, New York and one in Woodbridge, Virginia, put adults in trusted roles around students under scrutiny, and U.S. and allied agencies have issued vendor questions on post-quantum encryption. Abroad, hoax bomb threats hit European flights for the second time in a week, French strikes drew hundreds of thousands, and the UK's rewritten Chad advice flags terrorist kidnapping.

Guard patrols in Washington expand to military vehicles and boats
The Pentagon says Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth decided on October 29 to widen National Guard patrols in the capital, adding military vehicles and boats. At a council hearing, D.C. residents raised concerns about troops and federal law enforcement activity, and lawmakers are pushing to send the troops home while the administration calls for more patrols.
Why it matters. The principal, spouse and household staff with homes or offices in Washington and Northern Virginia, and executives visiting for meetings, should expect a heavier uniformed presence on roads and waterways. Drivers and security teams need schedules and routes that account for it.
What to do
Brief your drivers and Washington-area staff on the expanded patrols before your next trip.
Build extra time into arrival and departure plans for DC meetings.
A school aide fired over stalking allegations puts staff vetting in focus
News12 reports that a teaching assistant at Valley Stream North was fired amid allegations of stalking a student. The report does not give further detail on the allegations.
Why it matters. Your children, and the nannies, tutors and school staff around them, are the exposure here: any adult with routine access to a child can become a stalking risk. A fixated adult in that circle reaches your family before any outside threat does.
What to do
Confirm who is authorized to contact and collect each child, and write it down.
Ask your children's schools how they screen and supervise staff who have one-on-one access.
Woodbridge coach charged after allegedly driving a teen player off alone
WTOP reports police have charged a Gar-Field girls basketball coach. Police say that in June he collected a 15-year-old player, took her to an undisclosed place in the county and sexually assaulted her, then returned her home.
Why it matters. Families in Northern Virginia with children in team sports, and the staff who handle drop-offs, are exposed when a coach or other adult arranges one-on-one transport. A rule on pickups and rides closes that gap.
What to do
Set a firm rule that no coach or instructor transports your child alone.
Tell household staff to release children only to adults on your approved list.
Agencies give you vendor questions on post-quantum encryption for your data
CISA, Australia's cyber agency and the NSA released joint guidance and a quick-reference list for judging whether vendors are ready to move to post-quantum cryptography. The agencies warn that widely used public-key encryption becomes vulnerable as quantum computing advances.
Why it matters. The family office and its executives rely on banks, custodians, trust companies and cloud providers that hold family records and move money. The guidance gives you a ready list of questions to put to each of them.
What to do
Send the agencies' vendor questions to your custodians, trust company and cloud providers.
Ask each vendor for a written migration timeline and keep it on file.

Hoax bomb threats hit at least 21 European flights, second wave in a week
The UK government calls the threats a malicious hoax, and at least 21 flights were affected. Passengers in Italy, Poland and Spain described landing at a military base and going through security checks and delays. BBC Verify has analysed messages showing how one threat was relayed through air traffic control.
Why it matters. Traveling principals, families and aircrew on European routes face diversions and long delays on short notice, even though the threats proved false. Staff arranging ground transport and connections need flexibility built in.
What to do
Give your travel team authority to rebook and reroute without waiting for approval.
Keep a second ground-transport option at every European arrival point.
Union strikes put an estimated 600,000 on French streets over living costs
The interior ministry estimates 600,000 people joined protests across France as unions joined strikes over the cost of living. The unions say the real number was far higher.
Why it matters. Families and executives traveling to Paris or elsewhere in France, and the drivers and staff moving them, may meet crowds and disruption on short notice. Plan transfers and meetings with that in mind.
What to do
Check protest and strike notices before each French transfer or meeting.
Brief drivers on alternate routes and a fallback pickup point.
UK advice on Chad rewritten with terrorist kidnapping and robbery warnings
The UK Foreign Office reviewed its Chad travel advice and changed it throughout. The update covers terrorism, terrorist kidnapping, robbery, travel outside N'Djamena and regional risks.
Why it matters. Executives, advisors and staff with any travel to Chad, including trips outside the capital, face a kidnap and robbery picture the UK has just restated. Contingency planning should precede any booking.
What to do
Review the updated UK advice before approving any travel to Chad.
Agree a communication and response plan with your security team before departure.
